SOP For Disposal of Contaminated Material

 SOP for disposal of contaminated material containing microbial growth is described in this post which you can follow in the section of microbiological lab.

Objective:

This procedure has been established for disposal of contaminated material containing microbial growth.

Scope:   

This procedure is applicable to  microbiology lab.

Responsibility:                          

Microbiologist.                             

Accountability:

Quality Control Manager.            

Procedure:

First of all wear protective clothing such as gloves, facemask and overall.

Collect all contaminated materials such as including cultures ampoules, culture slants/ stabs etc.

Pack all the material into disposable bags and set for autoclaving as per SOP.

At the end of autoclaving the drain out the liquid medium while hot, with running water. 

Contaminated plastic-ware 

Pack all the disposable materials into an autoclavable disposable bag and run the autoclave cycle and after autoclavation send all the material to disposal storage area. 

Media filled ampoules/ vials 

Autoclave the contaminated vials as per SOP.

At the end of autoclavation all vials must be crushed and then disposed off in powder form

Contaminated mops and latex gloves 

Collect all the contaminated mops/tissue papers and latex gloves in disposable bag and sent all the material to disposal storage area. 

Biological indicators 

Collect all the biological indicators after each use and pack them properly in disposable bag and then autoclave the indicators as per SOP and after autoclaving discard the material.

Culture Media For Sterility 

The media of sterility without growth shall be drained into the sink after adding 5-10ml of 2.5 % phenol solution/100 ml of media to be discarded. 

The sterility media with growth must be autoclave as  per SOP and send to disposal storage area.
