Abbe’s Refractometer Calibration SOP



1.0  OBJECTIVE:
To lay down the calibration procedure of Refractometer to provide a system to calibrate, control and maintain the equipment used for inspection measuring and test equipment in order to ensure the correctness of measurement and test status.
2.0  SCOPE:
This shall be applicable to the Refractometer of Quality Control Instrument Laboratory.
3.0  RESPONSIBILITY:
3.1  Technical Assistant/ Helper.
3.2  Q.C Analyst.
4.0  ACCOUNTABILITY:
4.1  Manager-Quality Control.
5.0  MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT:
5.1  Refractometer.
5.2  Distilled water.
5.3  Carbon tetrachloride.
5.4  Toluene.
6.0  PROCEDURE:
6.1  Operate the instrument as per SOP.
6.2  To obtain the accuracy, the apparatus should be calibrated against distilled water, carbon tetrachloride and toluene.
6.3  Maintain the require temperature of the particular liquid as mentioned in annexure-1.
6.4  Observe the refractive index of the different liquid at temperature as mentioned in annexure-1.
6.5  Record the results in annexure-1.
6.6  The performance of the instrument is satisfactory if the observed refractive indexes are within the limits as mentioned in annexure-1.
6.7  Frequency:
6.7.1        Once in three month.
6.8  Record the result on the “Calibration Record”, “Calibration Log Book” & paste the “Calibration Status Sticker” on Refractometer.
6.9  Precautions:
6.9.1        Proper handling of the instrument.
6.9.2        Temperature should be carefully adjusted and maintained since refractive index varies significantly with temperature.
